My phonecall with Ryan.
It all started when I got an e-mail from Ryan's mother Nona on December 5th. I didn't read the e-mail until December 7th because it had ended up in my junkmail folder. All mail from people that aren't on my contacts list or safe list ends up in my junkmail folder. The subject of the e-mail was 'Ryan Merriman Here' and I thought, 'yeah right! probably just another poser'. I get a lot of e-mail from people either pretending to be Ryan or asking if I am Ryan. I was about to delete the message when I thought that it couldn't hurt to read it, after all not many visitors from this site or fans of Ryan know about this e-mail address. The e-mail said that Nona wanted to set up a phonecall with Ryan so that he could answer all the questions that I had sent in. I immediately responded and we set up the phonecall for Sunday December 10th, 7 p.m. (GMT+1 Amsterdam) that's 12 p.m. US central time.
The next couple of days I just couldn't stop thinking about what I was going to say to Ryan. I'm very good at English but I have little to no experience speaking the language. I've been to London 3 times and to the US 1 time, and I've given a couple of presentations in English, that's all the experience I have. I can understand it perfectly, I can write it almost perfectly but speaking it is a totally different thing, especially when I'm nervous. I have the sentences all perfect in my head but when I open my mouth the sentences come out all wrong.
Anyways, I moved our phone from the living room to my bedroom, so that I could have a little privacy. And than the waiting began. And at approximately 7.10 pm (GMT+1) the phone finally rang. I had Ryan and his mother Nona on the phone. They were so nice to me. I said that I was a little nervous and they said that I didn't need to be nervous. We talked like for 15 minutes. I'm not ready to reveal what we talked about in those first 15 minutes. Part of it is confidential and part of it is some news that I'm not ready to reveal just yet. I just want everything to be arranged first before I announce it. It's nothing about a new project for Ryan or anything like that, I wouldn't keep that from you. Anyways, Ryan's mother got of the line and Ryan took the phone of the speaker so he could answer all the questions that you have send in. I've added some more questions that I came up with during the interview.
When is Home of the giants going to be released?
A spring release during March Madness would have been great but it will most likely be later in 2007 before HOTG gets out there.
001. Is it true that you auditioned for the role as Peter Parker on the first Spiderman movie? Or is that just a rumor? Ryanne, The Netherlands
That is true. I did an audition. I was a little young though. I was 16 or 17 and Tobey was like 22.
002. What was it like to act in front of a green screen? Was FD3 the first time that you have worked with a green screen? Ryanne, The Netherlands
It was really cool, they did a whole sound studio. That was not actually my first time, the first time was Luck of the Irish. They did some green screen for when I shrunk down to a leprechaun size.. It was actually my second time. It’s different because you have to imagine all the stuff. It’s also cool because when you see the finished project, it looks really cool. Way better than you thought.
003. What was it like working with Haley Joel Osment? Ryanne, The Netherlands
It was great. We hit it of really well. We were best friends within like 5 minutes. We got along really well and we still keep in thouch. Haley is in school right now, NYU
004. Which actors or actresses would you like to work with in the future? Ryanne, The Netherlands
Matt Damon. Brad Pitt. Kiera Knightly, Skyla Johanson, Amy Adams, Ricky Bobby too.
005. In both Home Of the Giants and Luck of the Irish your jersey number is 11. I was curious if that was for a reason or just by chance? Thanks Ryan! Kelly, Massachusetts
Its my favourite number. My lucky number. When I played sports as a kid my number was always number 11.
Do they let you chose your jersey number in the movie?
Yes, they ask you what jersey number you would like to have.
006. if you weren't an actor, what other career choice do you think you would choose? Amanda, Michigan and Stephanie, Brazil
Fireman, police. Something to do with action, sitting behind a desk would be nothing for me. A job were I could help people.
007. Do u think that in the future u will work with Jesse McCartney? Lu, Italy
Maybe. You never know with what actors you are going to work. If you said to me last year that I would be working with Val Kilmer on Comanche moon than I wouldn’t have believed you. But you never know. It’d love to if the project was right.
What was it like to work with Val Kilmer?
It was great, he’s a great guy. I lot of people think that he’s kind of crazy, he’s eccentric. But we all are a little nuts.
008. What are you doing for Thanksgiving this year in 2006? Dana, Texas
I was camping out with my buddies for 4 days. And than we came back and I had thanksgiving with my parents. I had some pot roast and some Yorkshire pudding. And the following Sunday I fried a Turkey at my grandmothers home.
010. How was it working with Jesse Moss in Final Destination 3? Was he funny? Lacy, Mississippi
Great. We’re the same kind of person, really outgoing. We got a long really well. He’s a funny person. We didn’t have much screen time together but the rollercoaster scene took a month to shoot.
011. Do you enjoy living in Hollywood better than Oklahoma? or just only Oklahoma where you grew up and fly to L.A.? Alice, Ohio
I do enjoy living in L.A, as I have gotten older, I have gotten more friends there. But I’ll always love Oklahoma more because it’s where I grew up, my family is here, it’s were I went to school. I like to ride four wheelers, go fishing, camping. I’ll always be an Oklahoma boy.
012. What kind of movie do you prefer to play in ? Drama, comedy, horror, romantic... allis, France
I like all of it. I do like drama, but it’d be different when I do 5 drama’s in a row or 5 horror’s in a row. You have to mix it up. I like all aspects of acting. I don’t think that you have to have 1 favorite or 1 style because than you kind of limit yourself. To think of it, I haven’t really done any romantic movies, I guess Spin is kind of romantic. A romantic comedy would be great to do some day.
013. Have you ever considered doing any voice-overs (for animation or videogames)? Daniella, Caracas, Venezuela
I would love to do that but I don’t think that my voice is unique enough to do a voice over. In my opinion you got to have a voice that makes people think ‘oh, that’s cool’, something unique. I think that my voice is kinda boring. But yeah I guess, if the characters is good, it would be cool to do something like that.
014. What was it working with Mary Elizabeth Winstead?, your co-star from FD3. Ivonne, California
She was a lot of fun, she’s a happy person and just amazing at what she does. I love Mary, she’s very talented. She was so nice, a really nice girl. She’s probably one of my favourite people I have worked with so far.
015. Hi Ryan! I'm a big fan your and my English is really bad.. =P So, my question is.. : Are you single? Married? Answer me! Please! Kisses, Luciana
Chaib, Brazil
I’m happily married to Micol.
016. Hey Ryan! I know you are involved in some charitable organizations, are there any that you aren't involved in and would like to get involved with? Elaine, Kentucky
Operation smile. They help kids with cleft palates and make them look better. That would be a good charity to get involved with.
017. Hi Ryan, I would like to know if you will come to France once? if you know the date and the place could you inform me? thank you very much for all that you brought to your fans! You Are loved! Elodie, France
I would love to come to France one day. Hopefully I would be coming there for a big movie premiere one of these days. I would also love to visit, Greece, Egypt, Sweden, Iceland, Germany. I would actually love to travel the world before I die.
018. Dear Ryan, Do you think there is any chance of you coming to Malta? Kimberley , Malta
Maybe. It sounds like a warm country, a good place to be.
019. Are you always in relationships with some actors and actresses after the end of filming, like Mary-Elizabeth Winstead from FD3 ? Jérémie, France
Yeah you become really good friends with the people you work with. I still keep in touch with Mary. I still talk to Arnold and Alex (from Veritas). Arnold is in blood diamond right now, which is a really good movie. You stay friends and have relationships, it’s kind of like a extended family.
020. Hi Ryan, have you ever thought of visiting Florida? Alexis, Florida
I love Florida, I’ve been there for a film festival in South beach. I would like to go back one time for vacation and to play golf.
Do you play a lot of golf?
Yeah, it’s an addiction. I love it.
021. Ryan, did you ever have any regrets or second thoughts about your career? You're a great actor though... so keep it up! Amanda, Michigan
No. It has all been a great blessing. I’ve always been positive about it and I don’t have any regrets about it.
022. What is your advice for aspiring young actors? The-Wicked-One, imdb.com HOTG message board
Live life. You gotta have life experience. Don’t be shy. You’ll get a lot of no’s before you get a yes, don’t let that stop you.
023. Was it fun to die TWO different times? What was it like being killed those ways? Lacy, Mississippi
It was a cool experience. It was a lot of fun, lots of blood and the body cast. I died in The Colt, FD3 and The Ring 2. I’m getting pretty good at it actually :P
024. At night, what do you do before sleep? (any bedtime rituals? reading a book or anything like that?) *B Joana, PORTUGAL
Brush my teeth and drink a glass of ice water, than watch some tv and put the tv on sleeper timer. I always need to have some noise when I sleep. I can’t sleep when it’s dead quite.
025. Is it harder or easier to be cast now that you're a grown up ?And on which criteria’s do you choose your roles? Nathalie, France
Harder. You do have the experience of your previous roles. But there’s more involved in the roles that you played, you not just a kid playing a kid. I always try to do stuff that is different, that you haven’t done before. Something that is challenging.
026. Hi Ryan!! Do you ever like tour the country and visit fans? And also how would you go about trying to achieve world peace? Yeah I know a weird question but I think its a good one! Thanks! Chandi, Pa, USA
I haven’t really done the whole tour thing and visit fans. But as I get older and get more fans around the world I’d like to travel the world and hopefully visit some fans. As for world peace. Everybody has just got to be a little bit nicer to each other. That would help a lot.
027. Ryan, have you ever had any deaf fans of yours for years? Alice, Ohio
I do have a couple, but I don’t know of many who have brought it to my attention that they are deaf.
Question from Ryan to Alice. How do you go about watching my films? Do you read subtitles or lipread?
028. What was your favorite big-screen movie to shoot and your favorite made-for-tv movie to shoot? Alaina, United States, MA
Big screen movies: Final Destination 3 the most fun to do, I worked with people my age and there was a lot of action. Acting wise, Home of the giants because it was a character that I really understood. Tv movies. Comanche moon, it was a lot of fun every day, we got to were guns, we rode horses al day. The sets were huge and the cast was great. It was an amazing experience.
So Home of the giants is a big screen movie?
Yeah it’s going to be in theaters.
I heard someone say that it’s going to be a straight to dvd movie.
Who said that? That’s not true. The people who made this movie say that it has more of a blockbuster appeal than an indy movie appeal. The fact that Haley Joel Osment is in it certainly helps.
And the movie is more marketable than the makers thought that it would be.
029. How much fanmail do you get? And do you ever answer back fanmail or do you have someone else do it for you? And do you autograph your own pictures when people send in for them or does someone/something do that for you? =] Alaina, United States, MA
I do autograph all of the pictures myself. I don’t read all of my fanmail. I read most of it. I have people helping me with reading the fanmail. They send me the special ones and I make sure that I respond to them.
030. Who is your favorite actress? I love you **best wishes** Candy, USA
Meryl Streep. She’s amazing in whatever she does. And I’m starting to like Reese Whiterspoon. She was great in Walk the line.
031. What's your favorite color? I love you **best wishes** Candy, USA
Either black or blue. I wear a lot of blue, because my eyes are blue, and I wear a lot of black too. And all my cars are black. And my dogs are black.
How many cars do you have?
Jeep, truck, another big truck, black Honda, black boat, black bmw. I like black cars. They're still pretty after you have washed them.
032. Hey Ryan! Are you interested in foreign movies/music, like Asian movies/music? And if so, which ones? Because there are amazing Asian movies out there! I especially love Korean movies like Old Boy, Memories of Murder, Marathon and much, much more :) Nathalie, France
I don’t really watch a lot of foreign films. In the US we have a lot of blockbusters and not really the diverse movies that they have in for example France. But I’ve watched a couple of independent films from foreign directors that were really cool.
Do you watch a lot of movies?
I love to watch movies. Sometimes a use it as research for a certain director that I’m auditioning for.
033. Hey, Dude!...Do you like cereal? Stephanie, Michigan
I do. I like two cereals. Raisin bran and Oh’s. And scrambled eggs and ham. And I like oatmeal with some chopped up strawberry’s and raisins.
034. You say that you call Choctaw, Oklahoma your home but are there any other places that you can call your home or is it just Choctaw? Alice, Ohio
Nope. Choctaw is my home.
035. Why is it your full name (Ryan Earl Merriman) on Taken that appears and not just "Ryan Merriman" like in all the others movies you did ? allis, France
I don’t know. But I would really like to know if fans like ‘Ryan Earl Merriman’ better than ‘Ryan Merriman’.
036. Well, since I am a huge fan of scary movies, what is your favorite scary movie? Jamie, Pennsylvania
IT. I watched it when I was at an age when you’re very venerable for these type of movies. It scared the crap out of me.
037. Would you ever consider being in a Chucky (Child's Play) movie? Jamie, Pennsylvania
I’ve done my share of horror movies for now. If I do more horror movies at this point in my carreer I would get labelled as a horror movie actor and that’s not something that I want. I would like to play in a murder mistery movie like The Skeleton key with Kate Hutson but no more slasher movies. A thriller would be cool, a psychological thriller.
038. Would you like to play in TV series such as Prison Break or 24? Or maybe you'd prefer to play in a sitcom like Friends ? Nathalie, France
It would be cool to play in a show like Prison break or 24 because it’s high action and intense every week. And it would be so much fun making something like Friends, you can make people laugh.
039. Do you have a religion? or Do you just believe in God? Stephanie, Michigan
I’m a country Baptist, born and raised. I used to go to church every weekend when I was younger but now only on special occasions. Baptizes, eastern, Christmas. I don’t think that it’s necessary to go to Church to be a good Christian.
I gotta go get ready for an audition tape that I’m putting together for a Robert Redford movie. I gotta go read that script.
Me:
I hope that you get the part.
Ryan:
I do too, we’d have something to talk about. I appreciate everything that you’re doing and I’m glad that we did all the questions and we’ll be in touch.
Me:
Alright.
Ryan:
Bye bye.
Me:
Bye.
Well that's it. The phone call lasted for a total of an hour! :D I hope you all like the answers!
Thanks again Ryan and Nona for this phone call! Ryan, I wish you all the luck on your audition.
